Welcome to GIBRALTAR

Information about GIBRALTAR Gibraltar is a tiny British colony situated where Europe almost touches Africa and where the Mediterranean meet the Atlantic. To the ancient Greeks and Romans, it was one of the two Pillars of Hercules, set up by the mythical hero to mark the edge of the known world. Subsequently it became a bargaining chip and a bone of contention between the British and Spanish, due to its strategic location. Nowadays its population are firmly in favour of retaining British sovereignty. Despite its size (it is only 5km in length), Gibraltar nevertheless has a fascinating history which is strongly linked to both Spain and Britain at the height of their empirical powers, and this is detailed wonderfully at the Gibraltar Museum and in the 70km of tunnels which were carved into the rock by the British Army. Nowadays it is a bustling centre of commerce, with banking, shipping, oil and tourism all making a contribution to a thriving economy.
